Huawei Smartphones – An Innovative New Patent In Skincare

Huawei has set its sights on the female market with an interesting new patent to analyze facial and skin structure.

Smartphones have entered the health and fitness sector of the market, however this is the first patent to focus solely on facial skin care, one of the most lucrative sectors of the cosmetics market.

Huawei Technologies filed a patent with the World Property Organization (WIPO) in July 2021. Titled “Appearance analysis method, and electronic device”, it was released on 27 January 2022 after being approved in December 2021.

Foxconn – A Light At The End of The Chip Crisis

Foxconn, the biggest assembler of iPhones, forecasts an easing of the global electronic components shortages this year.

This is welcome news to both electronics and car manufacturers who have seen demand outstrip supply last year due to component shortages. Termed the “chip crisis”, smartphone manufacturers have been adversely affected and with so many new launches on the horizon, chip supply remains a critical supply chain deliverable.

Samsung Achieves Record Growth in 2021

Samsung Electronics surged through to achieve a record high for sales in both the fourth quarter of 2021 and for the full 2021 year. Samsung’s revenue for the fourth quarter was 13,87 trillion Korean Won (KRW) (~$11,5 billion) with revenue for the full year at 279,6 trillion KRW (~$232,4 billion), a 24% y/y growth.

Samsung states that the main driver behind the record fourth quarter revenue growth was the finished product businesses, with increases in sales of premium smartphones, foldable phones, TVs and home appliances.

Component Shortages & Smartphone Growth

Fourth quarter 2021 global shipping numbers of smartphones illustrate how recovery after the global Covid-19 crisis in 2020 was tempered by the chip crisis.

Shipments in the fourth quarter of 2021 were 365 million units versus 396 in 2020, driven by component shortages. Strategy Analytics Linda Sui stated “Factory constraints and component shortages continued to restrict smartphone supply in the final quarter of last year. Full-year smartphone shipments rose +5% year on year to 1,36 billion units in 2021, recovering from a sharp Covid-led decline of -8% year on year during 2020”.
