MediaTek’s New Flagship Dimensity 9000 Plus

MediaTek has announced the launch of its latest chipset, the Dimensity 9000+ as a competitor to Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

The biggest difference between the newer chip and the Dimensity 9000 is the increase in CPU power. This main Cortex X-2 performance core has upped the clock speed to 3,2GHz from that of 3,05GHz on its predecessor. This will provide a 5% boost in performance, while the Arm Mali-G710 MC10 GPU graphic processor will increase its performance by 10%.

Dimensity 9000+ supports Quad HD resolution displays with refresh rates up to 144Hz or FullHD displays up to 180Hz.

Other features from its earlier chipset, such as support for 320MP sensors, triple HDR recording with up to 3 cameras and the latest connectivity standards remain.

Through the lens of Samsung’s new 200MP smartphone camera

Samsung has officially unveiled its latest camera technology with the introduction of its 200MP ISOCELL HP3, an image sensor with the industry’s smallest 0,56-micron pixels.

This smaller pixel size of the camera allows the sensor to fit in a 20% smaller space, an important consideration for smartphones manufacturers where the trend is towards producing slimmer devices.

Generally, smaller pixels mean less light capture, however the new ISOCELL HP3 employs pixel-binning technology to side-step this issue. The sensor is able to merge four pixels to output 50MP images with a 1,12-micron pixel size or 16 pixels to output a 12,5MP image with 2,24-micron pixels, ideal for both low-light and night photography.

Smartphone Shipments Down in Europe in Q1

The European market declined a massive 12% in Q1 this year according to the latest Counterpoint research. This was the lowest point reached since 2013 and is due to a number of factors in play.

Several factors such as component shortages, the harsh Covid-19 related lockdowns in China and a worsening geo-political and economic environment fuelled by the continued Russia-Ukraine war were the major contributors.

Counterpoint Research’s Associate Director Jan Stryjak stated that “Rising inflation levels across the region are impacting consumer spending, while Samsung and Apple, Russia’s first and third ranked smartphone vendors, halted all shipments into Europe’s largest market in early March 2022”.
